Water Jet Cutting: The Best Way to Cut Quartz and Granite

Why We Use Water Jet Fusion Pro Saws on Quartz & Granite

When it comes to countertops, precision isn’t just a bonus—it’s a must. That’s why at Countertops in Montana, we use Water Jet Fusion Pro Saws for cutting and shaping our quartz and granite materials. These saws combine high-pressure water with diamond blades, giving us the edge (literally) when it comes to quality, accuracy, and safety.

What Is a Water Jet Fusion Pro Saw?

Water Jet Fusion Pro Saws use a combination of high-speed diamond blades and pressurized water flow to cut through dense materials like quartz, granite, marble, and more. The water acts as a coolant and dust suppressant, allowing for smoother cuts and longer blade life.

1. Precision You Can See

Quartz and granite are both incredibly durable—but that strength also makes them hard to cut cleanly with basic equipment. Water Jet Fusion Pro Saws provide razor-sharp accuracy, which is especially critical for:

  • Seamless edges

  • Intricate sink and faucet cutouts

  • Custom shapes and curves

2. Less Heat, Less Risk

Friction from dry cutting can generate intense heat, which can lead to:

  • Microfractures in the stone

  • Warping or discoloration in quartz

  • Blade damage or reduced tool life
By using a water jet system, heat is minimized, reducing the risk of damage to the material.

3. Cleaner Cuts, Less Waste

The water not only keeps things cool but also washes away debris instantly, allowing for a clearer cutting path. This results in:

  • Fewer chips and cracks

  • Less rework

  • Cleaner installation overall

4. Better for Our Team, Better for You

Stone cutting can create dangerous silica dust. Water Jet Fusion saws drastically reduce airborne particles, creating a safer environment for our team—and keeping dust out of your home during install prep.

The Final Cut

When you’re investing in a quartz or granite countertop, the material matters—but so does the method. Water Jet Fusion Pro Saws let us bring out the best in each slab, from cut to polish. The result? Clean lines, tight fits, and flawless finishes—built to last.

🌞 Montana’s Favorite Quartz Countertop Trends for Summer 2025

Summer in Montana means long days, natural light, and the perfect time to upgrade your home before fall settles in. This season, homeowners across the state are leaning into quartz countertops for their mix of durability, style, and low maintenance — and we're seeing some gorgeous trends take shape.

Here’s what’s hot in quartz right now — and a few product picks we’re loving at Countertops In Montana.

🏞️ Warm Earth Tones Inspired by Montana Landscapes

The rolling hills of the Bitterroot and the dusty beauty of eastern Montana are inspiring warm quartz hues this summer. Soft beige, creamy sand, and gentle terracotta tones bring comfort and calm to any space.

💡 Recommended Quartz:

  • Et. Marfil by Cosentino – a subtle and sophisticated creamy beige with a touch of marble elegance.

  • Serena by HanStone – warm and inviting with soft movement, perfect for cozy yet modern kitchens.

🪨 Bold Veining with Big Sky Energy

Statement veining is in — and Montana homes are embracing the bold. Whether it’s gold veining on white, or deep grays against a neutral backdrop, these patterns add drama and luxury to a space without overwhelming it.

💡 Try This:

  • Lumataj by MSI – brilliant white with high-impact dark veining for a bold yet clean look.

  • Calacatta Elysio by MSI – if you love a touch of gold in your accents, along with those marble whites and gray veining, this is your showstopper. Subtle veining.

🪵 Matte Finishes for Natural Montana Charm

Matte quartz is trending for good reason: it delivers a warm, natural feel that suits both rustic cabins and modern ranch homes. The finish helps reduce glare and blends seamlessly into Montana’s light-filled summer interiors.

Pro Tip: Matte quartz is especially beautiful in rooms with lots of windows and natural wood accents.

🌱 Eco-Friendly Quartz for Conscious Mountain Living

Montana homeowners are becoming more eco-conscious — and quartz manufacturers are responding with more sustainable options made from recycled content or created with cleaner manufacturing processes.

💡 Ask About: HanStone’s "GreenGuard Certified" lines or Silestone’s HybriQ+ technology for an earth-friendly upgrade.

🛠️ Quartz Installations Booking Fast for Summer

We’re now offering free consultations across Ravalli, Missoula, Helena, Flathead, and Deer Lodge Counties — whether you’re planning a rustic kitchen, an elegant bathroom, or a stunning outdoor counter for summer BBQs.

How Cold Weather Impacts Countertops in Missoula, Montana And Ways to Protect Them

How Cold Weather Impacts Countertops In Missoula, Montana And Ways to Protect Them

Missoula, Montana, is known for its stunning natural landscapes and cold winters. While snowfall and freezing temperatures create a picturesque environment, they can also pose challenges for homeowners, particularly when it comes to their countertops. If you have quartz or granite countertops in Missoula, Montana, you may be wondering how the cold weather affects these materials and what you can do to prevent or fix any issues.

How Cold Weather Affects Quartz and Granite Countertops

Both quartz and granite are popular choices for countertops in Missoula, Montana, due to their durability and aesthetic appeal, but extreme cold can have unintended consequences. Here’s what can happen:

1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Cold weather causes materials to contract, and this is no exception for stone countertops. When temperatures fluctuate, minor expansions and contractions occur, which can eventually lead to small cracks or fissures over time, particularly if the countertop is installed outdoors or near drafty windows.

2. Cracking Due to Rapid Temperature Changes

Granite and quartz are naturally resistant to most temperature changes, but if you expose them to extreme conditions—such as placing a hot pan directly on a frozen countertop—the sudden shift can cause stress fractures.

3. Moisture Damage and Ice Formation
If water seeps into tiny pores or cracks in a granite countertop, freezing temperatures can cause the moisture to expand, potentially leading to larger cracks or chipping. Quartz, being non-porous, is less susceptible to this issue, but the cold can still cause brittleness over time.

4. Sealant Breakdown
Granite countertops require periodic sealing to maintain their resistance to moisture and stains. Freezing temperatures, combined with regular household use, can degrade the sealant over time, making the countertop more vulnerable to damage.

How to Prevent and Fix Cold-Weather Damage to Your Countertops

If you live in Missoula, Montana, and want to ensure your countertops remain in top condition throughout the winter, here are some essential tips:

Preventative Measures:
Use Proper Sealing: If you have granite countertops, apply a high-quality sealant at least once a year to prevent moisture infiltration.

Avoid Direct Heat Exposure: Always use trivets or heat pads when placing hot items on your countertops to prevent thermal shock.

Control Indoor Temperatures: Try to maintain a stable indoor temperature to reduce the risk of contraction and expansion stress.

Wipe Up Spills Immediately: Prevent water from seeping into cracks by cleaning up spills as soon as they happen.

Use Insulating Covers for Outdoor Countertops: If you have an outdoor kitchen, consider covering your countertops during the winter to protect them from direct exposure to freezing temperatures.

Fixing Cold Weather Damage

Repair Small Cracks with Epoxy: If minor cracks appear, you can use a clear epoxy resin to fill them and prevent further expansion.

Reseal Granite Countertops: If you notice increased staining or moisture absorption, it may be time to reseal your countertops.

Professional Polishing: If your countertop surface becomes dull or brittle, a professional stone restoration service can polish and restore its finish.

Replace Severely Damaged Sections: If cracks are too deep or large to repair, you may need to replace part of the countertop or consult a professional to assess the best course of action.

To conclude: If you own quartz or granite countertops in Missoula, Montana, it’s important to be mindful of how the cold weather can impact them. While these materials are incredibly resilient, they are not entirely immune to damage caused by freezing temperatures, moisture, and rapid heat changes. By following the right preventative measures and addressing any issues promptly, you can ensure your countertops remain beautiful and functional for years to come.

Here at Countertops In Montana, we understand these concerns and as your countertop provider will always do our best to address any issues that come your way, but it’s also important as a homeowner to understand what work you can do on your end, to keep your countertops in tip-top-shape in any weather condition. How to Repair Quartz and Granite Countertops: A Guide for Montana Homeowners

How to repair your quartz and granite countertops: A helpful guide for Montana Homeowners

Being a Montana Homeowner, quartz and granite is a beautiful option for your new kitchen countertops. While quartz and granite is very stain, scratch and heat resistant, once and awhile we do get asked how to repair a small chip, scratch, etc. With this in mind, we have provided for you a few tips to make your countertops feel like they’re brand new. If you’re living here in Montana, you know that our homes take a beating from all kinds of weather—hot summers, cold winters, and everything in between. And if you’ve got beautiful quartz or granite countertops, you’ll want to keep them in tip-top shape. Whether it’s a small chip, a crack, or a stain, here’s a simple guide to repairing those countertops and keeping them looking as good as new.

Small Chips and Scratches? No Problem!Life happens—maybe you dropped a heavy pot or banged the edge of your countertop while cooking. Don’t worry, small chips and scratches are easy to fix!

✔ For Both Quartz & Granite:

Clean the Area – Use mild soap and warm water, then dry it completely.

Use Clear Epoxy or Super Glue – Apply a small amount to the chipped area and smooth it out with a razor blade or putty knife.

Let It Dry – Most epoxies take a few hours to set; check the instructions on your product.

Buff & Polish – Lightly sand with a fine-grit pad if needed, then apply stone polish to blend it in.

Dealing with a Crack or Large Chip - If you have a deep crack or a big chip, you’ll need a little more work to get it looking right.

✔ For Quartz:

Use a color-matched epoxy or resin filler to blend the crack with your countertop.

Fill the crack carefully and smooth it out before letting it cure.

Lightly sand with a fine pad and buff it to restore the shine.

✔ For Granite:

Use a two-part epoxy designed for natural stone.

If the color doesn’t match, mix in some stone powder from a similar-colored piece.

Once the epoxy is dry, smooth it out with fine sandpaper and reseal the area.

Broken Corner or Edge? Here’s What to DoThis one might feel intimidating, but you’ve got this!

✔ Steps to Fix It:

If the broken piece is available, clean it and dry both surfaces.

Apply a strong stone adhesive (polyester resin or epoxy) to both the break and the counter.

Hold it in place with a clamp or heavy object until fully set.

Once dry, sand and polish it for a seamless look.

Stain Removal (For Granite Owners)Granite is porous, which means it can absorb spills and leave stains. Luckily, there’s an easy fix!

✔ DIY Stain Remover:

For oil stains: Make a paste with baking soda and water.

For organic stains (like wine or coffee): Use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Apply the paste to the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit overnight.

Rinse it off in the morning, and your counter should look good as new!

When to Call a ProfessionalIf your countertop has major cracks, is near a sink or cooktop, or you’re unsure about DIY repairs, it’s best to call in a pro. A countertop specialist can ensure your repair is done safely and seamlessly.

Final Tips for Keeping Your Countertops Beautiful✔ Use cutting boards to avoid scratches.✔ Wipe up spills quickly (especially on granite!).✔ Reseal granite every year to prevent stains.✔ Avoid placing hot pans directly on quartz (it’s heat-resistant but not heat-proof!).

Taking care of your quartz and granite doesn’t have to be a headache. With a little know-how and the right supplies, you can keep your countertops looking great for years to come. Got any questions? Reach out—I’m happy to help!

Happy home maintenance, Montana friends!

Countertop Seams: Transparency in Countertop Installation for Montana Homeowners

Countertop Seams: Transparency in the Countertop Installation for Montana Home Owners

When it comes to installing new countertops, the excitement of upgrading your space is often accompanied by questions about the process. One area that sparks curiosity is will your new countertop have a seam? Yes. Most kitchens will have a seam.

Thinking like an installer, the first question you need to ask yourself is how big are the slabs you are working with and what does your area look like? Every kitchen has its own finesse shape. Standard slabs are at around 5’ by 11’ - with this in mind, if you have an L shaped kitchen, you will more than likely have a seam. Keep in mind, we all do our best as countertop installers to hide the seam, but some seams you will see. For instance, if you choose a stark white quartz countertop, that seam will be visible. Whereas if you are looking at a granite countertop, more often than not, you won’t see the seam due to the variation of the veining, design and colors. Standard work practices are to bring the seam to a business card thickness and then installers use a color-match epoxy to blend with your new countertop design. It’s important you work with someone who sets the expectations from the beginning of the project. Transparency in this often-overlooked aspect of countertop installation helps ensure confidence in the final result.

The Importance of Transparency During Installation

Transparency is key to ensuring you’re confident in every step of the countertop installation process. For Montana homeowners, trust is essential, especially when it comes to investments like kitchen and bathroom counters. A professional installer should walk you through the materials, tools, and techniques they use to create a seamless, polished look. No shortcuts, no surprises—just honest communication.

So, what’s the magic behind those nearly invisible seams? Let’s dive into the materials and tools that make it happen.

Materials Used for Countertop Seam Fillers

The type of seam filler used depends on the material of your countertop. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand what’s involved:

  1. Quartz and Solid Surface Countertops

    • Epoxy Resin: A two-part epoxy mixed with pigments to match the countertop’s color ensures a strong and nearly invisible seam.

    • Acrylic Adhesive: For solid surface materials like Corian, color-matched adhesives bond the pieces together seamlessly.

  2. Granite and Marble Countertops

    • Polyester Resin or Epoxy: These fillers are mixed with pigments or stone dust to perfectly blend with the natural stone.

    • Silicone Sealant: In some cases, a flexible silicone sealant is used to accommodate slight movement.

  3. Laminate Countertops

    • Seam Fillers: Special products like SeamFil are color-matched to blend with laminate patterns.

    • Epoxy Adhesive: For extra durability, clear or color-matched epoxy is sometimes applied.

  4. Concrete Countertops

    • Concrete Filler: A mix of fine cement, pigments, and resin fills seams and complements the raw, industrial look of concrete.

    • Epoxy or Polyurethane Sealant: These add durability and prevent water from seeping into seams.

Tools of the Trade

Creating a flawless seam is part art, part science. Here are the tools professionals use:

  • Mixing Tools: For achieving the perfect color match.

  • Putty Knife or Spatula: To evenly apply the seam filler.

  • Gorilla Clamps: To hold the pieces together while the adhesive cures.

  • Sanding and Polishing Tools: For smoothing and blending the seam into the countertop.

Why This Matters for Your Montana Home

Montana is a place where nature’s beauty inspires how we build and design our homes. Your countertops should reflect that same harmony—with clean lines, natural materials, and craftsmanship you can trust. Understanding how seams are handled ensures you’re not just buying a countertop but investing in quality that lasts.

Why is One-Stop-Shop so important when it comes to your Montana Countertop Project?

One-Stop-Shop and the Benefits of Turnkey Services for your Countertop Project

Hey there, Montana homeowners! If you’re thinking about upgrading your kitchen or bathroom countertops, you know it’s not just about finding a beautiful surface—it’s about making sure everything fits seamlessly into your home’s style and function and working with a team that listens and gets the job done right. That’s where the magic of a one-stop-shop like Countertops in Montana comes in. Let’s dive into why choosing a company that offers full turnkey service is the key to a stress-free and stunning transformation.

What Does "One-Stop-Shop" Mean?

When we say one-stop-shop, we’re talking about more than just countertops. At Countertops in Montana, you’re not only getting access to a wide range of gorgeous materials, but you’re also tapping into a team that can handle every aspect of your project, including:

  • Sinks and Faucets for Kitchens and Vanities: No more running around to find the perfect match—we’ve got you covered.

  • Plumbing Services: Say goodbye to coordinating multiple contractors; our team ensures everything is hooked up and working perfectly.

  • Tile Installation: Need a backsplash for your kitchen, we’re here to make it happen.

  • Full Tearout: We handle the messy part of removing your old countertops, so you don’t have to lift a finger.

  • And Much More: Custom touches? Unique requests? We’re all ears!

Why Viewing Countertop Samples at Home Matters

Here’s a little secret: what looks amazing in a showroom might not look the same in your home. Lighting, cabinet finishes, and flooring all play a role in how your new countertop will appear once installed. That’s why it’s so important to see samples in your own space. Here’s why it makes a world of difference:

  1. True Colors Shine: Showroom lighting is often brighter or cooler than what you have at home. Viewing samples in your natural lighting helps you see their true color.

  2. Harmonize with Your Style: Your cabinets, flooring, and wall colors all interact with your countertop. Testing samples at home lets you ensure they complement each other perfectly.

  3. Peace of Mind: When you see how everything looks together in your home, you can feel confident about your choice before making a commitment.

  4. Seeing is believing: When you visit a showroom, more often than not, you are viewing a slab. How on earth are you suppose to understand what that will look like in your home? We provide 12 X 12 granite samples to view, we can THEN always visit the showroom to view veining patterns, etc. We also offer the option to have a photo-layout. Keep in mind, this is mainly used for our natural stone options: Quartzite and Granite. Quartz is very predictable and what you see is what you get.

How Does Viewing Samples Work?

At Countertops in Montana, we bring samples right to your door so you can make informed decisions without the guesswork. Did we mention it's FREE? Yep, we'll visit you with all of our samples, which are not the small ones they give you at big box stores. Our samples are Large, usually 6 x 12 or 12 x 12, to help you truly visualize your new kitchen.

More importantly, we are countertop experts. Our job is to go through and do a full in-home inspection BEFORE we even talk about cutting stone. You're not a customer to us, you're a partner. We are working together to make sure you have the exact countertop you want and that starts with questions. Example: Would you prefer 4" backsplash or tile? Would you prefer a 10, 12, 15" overhang? Do you want supports on that? Will you be hooking up the sink and faucet yourself? Do you need us to undermount or top mount your sink? When you do you need the job done by?

All of these questions are essential to making sure we deliver on the job you hired us to do and provide a quality service every time. This starts with our Free Full In-Home Consultation, Inspection and 10% off your entire job.

How Countertops in Montana Goes Above and Beyond

We understand that replacing countertops can feel like a daunting project. That’s why we’re dedicated to making the process as smooth as possible. With our full-service approach, you’ll enjoy:

The Most Durable Countertop Surfaces for Montana Homeowners

When you live in Montana, you know durability matters. Whether it’s your boots, your truck, or your countertops, you need materials that can handle the wear and tear of everyday life in Big Sky Country. Your countertops endure everything from hot pans to sharp knives to the occasional spilled glass of red wine. That’s why choosing a durable countertop is crucial for Montana homeowners. Let’s explore the top contenders to find the one that’s right for your home.

1. Quartzite: The Natural Champion

Quartzite is a superstar when it comes to durability. This natural stone is tougher than granite, making it highly resistant to scratches and chips. It’s also heat-resistant, so you don’t have to panic if you set a hot pan down for a moment. With proper sealing, quartzite can stand up to stains and moisture, ensuring it stays beautiful for years to come. If you want a natural stone that’s as tough as Montana’s winters, quartzite is a top choice.

2. Quartz: Low-Maintenance and Resilient

Quartz countertops are engineered to combine natural quartz with resins, creating a non-porous surface that’s resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria. Because it’s a combination of quartz and resin, quartz is not a natural stone and requires no maintenance. Warm water and soap is what we recommend. While quartz isn’t as heat-resistant as granite or quartzite, it’s still a durable option that’s perfect for those who want a low-maintenance surface. Plus, quartz offers consistent colors and patterns, making it a great choice for modern or minimalist designs.

3. Granite: A Reliable Classic

Granite has long been a favorite for homeowners seeking a combination of beauty and durability. This natural stone is scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, and capable of withstanding the occasional kitchen mishap. Granite’s variety of colors and patterns make it versatile enough for any design style, and with proper care, it can last a lifetime. It’s a solid option for busy Montana families, BUT keep in mind it’s a natural stone, you do need to end up sealing it once/twice a year. For No Maintenance, we suggest quartz.

4. Quartz: Low-Maintenance and Resilient

Quartz countertops are engineered to combine natural quartz with resins, creating a non-porous surface that’s resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria. While quartz isn’t as heat-resistant as granite or quartzite, it’s still a durable option that’s perfect for those who want a low-maintenance surface. Plus, quartz offers consistent colors and patterns, making it a great choice for modern or minimalist designs.

5. Soapstone: The Timeless Workhorse

Soapstone is another natural stone option that’s both durable and beautiful. It’s resistant to heat and won’t crack under temperature changes, making it a great choice for Montana’s fluctuating climate. While soapstone is softer than granite or quartzite and may scratch more easily, these marks can often be buffed out, adding to its charm and character.

6. Concrete: Industrial Strength with Style

Concrete countertops are gaining popularity for their industrial-chic look and extreme durability. Properly sealed concrete can handle heat, scratches, and stains, making it an excellent choice for homeowners who want something unique and long-lasting. The ability to customize colors and finishes is an added bonus, letting you tailor the look to your home’s aesthetic.

7. Solid Surface: The All-Around Performer

Solid surface countertops like Corian are non-porous and resistant to stains and bacteria. While they’re not as heat-resistant as natural stone, solid surface materials are durable and easy to repair if scratched. They’re an excellent choice for homeowners who prioritize seamless design and easy maintenance.

Choosing the Right Countertop for Your Montana Home

When selecting a countertop, think about how you use your kitchen. Are you a gourmet chef who needs heat-resistant surfaces? Do you have kids who are hard on everything? Or are you looking for something low-maintenance and easy to clean? Your lifestyle will help guide your decision.
